Eagle Gathering

What is Eagle Gathering?

One of UMW’s biggest traditions, Eagle Gathering, is candle-lighting ceremony that takes place the Sunday night before classes begin. The incoming freshman class walks from the bell tower to Ball Circle, while upperclassmen line Campus Walk and Ball Circle with their candles already lit. The Eagle Pipe Band plays and various speakers welcome the freshman class to the community. The ceremony ends with the upperclassmen lighting freshman’s candles.

My Experience

Last year, Eagle Gathering was virtual, so I did not get to fully experience this tradition. This year, UMW allowed the sophomore class to join the freshman. It was a really special start to this semester, especially after a year of only virtual activities.
